ABOUT
ACCOLADES
Born and raised in Singapore, Raey has wanted to make films since she was 15. She left home alone in 2014 to pursue her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons.) at York University in Canada. She has been churned out award-winning shorts from the get-go of film school as a student filmmaker, with experimental film AXIS (2015), winning the Merit Award at the Canada Shorts Film Festival 2016 and being showcased at Square Pegs 8 (2017 edition) hosted by Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre in Kingston, Ontario. Her short political documentary on the journey of National Democratic Party candidate - How To Youth in Politics (2016). has also gained an Honorary Mention at Canada Shorts Film Festival 2016, as well as Official Selection of Los Angeles CineFest 2016.
Upon graduating film school in 2017, she has gone on to continue making films with her signature style: a Raey Ang film is defined by its use of colour and stylistic manipulation of the lines of symmetry in a frame, as well as powerful scores that she collaborates with composers relentlessly on, as part of her belief that “sound is 51% of film”. As a writer-director, Raey brings onscreen a world she hopes to come true someday - a world where queer characters are just well, characters. Behind the scenes, she walks the talk by insisting on hiring a diverse, inclusive crew, proven by her short film Recollection (2016), featuring a cast and crew consisting of only women and non-binary folx. It went on to be official selections in T.O. Short Film Festival 2019 and LGBTQ Shorts Festival 2019.
Reprise (2019) would be Raey’s most significant and acclaimed work to date, sweeping awards throughout its run on the festival circuit. It won “Best Experimental Film” at the Toronto Shorts International Film Festival 2019, London International Monthly Film Festival and Florence Film Awards 2019. It won an Award of Excellence in Global Shorts 2019 as well as being a finalist in the categories of Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score. Official selections to numerous film festivals both in North America and Europe alike. Reprise also won Raey numerous awards as a director, such as Best Director (Female) at the Independent Shorts Awards 2019 and Best Indie Filmmaker at the Global Film Festival Awards 2019.
There is no stopping Raey when it comes to output, even a worldwide pandemic. She wrote, shot and directed Anna in 2021, which goes on to win her Outstanding Achievement in the categories of Best Director and Best Experimental Film, as well as Winner of Best Editor at World Film Carnival Singapore 2021. Anna is also an Official Selection in the Berlin Indie Film Festival and Cannes Short Film Festival in 2022.
She has just completed her latest short film Clouded in 2023, and it is currently on its festival circuit run while she works away at making her first feature film. She works in the Toronto industry as a filmworker to pay the bills, and is also an avid writer (be it prose, poetry or screenplays.) She often jokes that if she had the privilege of winning Singapore’s first Oscar, all she wants is free chye tow kueh (her favourite dish from back home.)
